Deanna unsuccessfully tried to hide her smile.

“See? Now you’re smiling. Don’t you feel better? Just look at what I have you doing. You wear suits, ties and business shirts. You stopped trying to mack everything wearing a skirt that comes your way. With my help, you’re raising a wonderful young lady and the list goes on and on.” Amanda looked down at Deanna’s feet. “We will have to do something about your motorcycle boots, though.”

“In a pig’s ass, you will. I’m not giving up the boots.” Deanna chuckled. “But I have to admit you are good, Boss Lady.”

“Good deserves to be rewarded, Director Jones, yes?”

“I couldn’t agree with you more, Deputy Commissioner Taylor. If some afternoon, let’s say after a session of a Junior Fellows event, you felt hungry and I felt hungry, perhaps we could satisfy our hunger in a nice restaurant of your choosing.”

“No doubt with Kelly and Izzy as chaperones, yes?”

Deanna nodded. “Kelly and I will see you this Saturday, same time and place?”

Elaine cleared her throat from the doorway. While it was nice to see them working on their relationship, the show had to go on. “Amanda, you’ll be late to your one-on-one with the commissioner. Dee, Herman said it was an emergency.”

Deanna nodded then strode through the door. “See you later, El,” she remarked over a shoulder.

“Yes. You will, Dee.” Elaine watched her best friend leave, then her glance returned her boss. “Dee looks better. What magic did you work on her, Amanda? You realize you did something. You’ve reached her when even I can’t.” She studied Amanda’s flushed face and the glow of longing in her dark eyes. “She doesn’t know, does she?”

“Who doesn’t know what?” Amanda sorted through the folders on her desk, selecting the one she used for her one-on-ones then grabbed legal pad and several pens.

“My best friend has no idea that you’re in love with her, does she, Amanda?”

Amanda sat back down slowly at her desk. Elaine’s words collapsed her like a bee stinger puncturing a full-blown balloon. She turned to face Elaine. “No, I didn’t say a word. You can’t tell her any more than I can.”

“Well, why not if it’s true?”

“It’s wrong, Elaine. I’m a deputy commissioner. I’m in a management position. She’s not. She’s labor. I supervise her. I can’t do anything that compromises either of us. Falling in love with a subordinate would do exactly that.” Amanda rubbed her temples then ran her hands through her hair. “God, this is a mess.”

“No, it’s not. You haven’t done a thing wrong. In fact, you’ve gone out of your way to keep things above board.”

“Sure I have. I spent the night at her place when she was in a drunken stupor. Then I drove her current paramour crazy enough to have a stroke. I did it just so I could get into her pants, but that wasn’t enough. I dumped my doctor girlfriend for her. When she didn’t return to work after performing a heroic gesture, I went to her home, once again using my wiles to convince her to come back to work.
